🌟 Staff Spotlight: Corey Massarelli! 🌟 Meet Corey Massarelli, our dedicated, gifted intervention specialist at Parkwood, Trebein, and Valley Elementary! With 14 years in the BCS family, she brings a wealth of experience and passion to her role. She has many memories throughout her career but especially loves the senior clap-out events. "It has been such a joy to see former students walk the halls and to have the honor of cheering them on and congratulating them on their graduation. The looks on their faces when they see all the students lining the halls and clapping...and when they see former teachers and are remembered and embraced and celebrated...it's just priceless!" When we asked her who had been most influential in her career, she said, "How can I just pick one?" It all began with my own first-grade teacher, Mrs. Hokanson. She is still, to this day, my favorite! That year, I decided I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. My mom and my grandma were also teachers and huge inspirations to me. All three had a deep love of children and an enthusiasm for learning that overflowed into me." In her 24th year of teaching, Corey is also grateful for her colleagues who guided and supported her journey. Corey enjoys family time, reading, DIY projects, and cheering on her kids and students in extracurricular activities outside of school. She is proud to be part of the Creek family and loves working with Beavercreek students, families, and staff. "Beavercreek means the world to me personally, as my three children have been blessed to be Valley, Ankeney, Ferguson, and BHS alumni. Our teachers truly love and care for the children of our community, and it's a gift to witness every day." 🧡🖤 We are grateful to have Corey as a part of our team! #StaffSpotlight

This week, our Valley Third Graders presented their Animal Research Reports. For these projects, students transform into Zoologists to answer the PBL driving question: How can I as a Zoologist design the ideal habitat for the animal of my choosing? Students spent weeks researching and writing a five-paragraph informational essay on an animal's habitat, life cycle, predator/prey, adaptations, and fun facts. Then the students created a diorama supporting their research of the animal's habitat. Check out some of these projects! 🦞🦎

CREEK FACT FRIDAY! Meet Roger Coy! Born on March 9, 1932 (the same year Main was built), Roger's journey through our school district is nothing short of remarkable. 🌟 Before starting his career with BCS, Roger graduated from the Main building in 1950. From bus driver to assistant superintendent, he held various roles, including secondary curriculum supervisor, assistant principal, and social studies teacher. 🚌👨‍🏫 His dedication didn't stop there - Roger's very first position was as a wrestling coach! 🤼‍♂️ After 32 years of service, he retired from BCS in 1988. Bonus Fun fact: Roger's family are descendants of Jacob Coy, after whom Coy Middle School is named. 🏫 Tomorrow is Roger's 92nd birthday. Help us wish him a very happy birthday! 🧡🖤

Last week, some of our buildings embarked on a thrilling Read-A-Thon adventure, while others are gearing up to kick off theirs this week! Principal Chivington made a grand entrance by riding in on a horse during an outdoor assembly – and yes, she even planted a kiss on the horse! 🐎 Plus, students had an opportunity to interact with one of the three horses brought over from King and Country Farm. It was an unforgettable experience that sparked enthusiasm for reading throughout our school community! 📚🌟 #ReadAThonFun #ValleyElementaryAdventure

Check out this week's "Creek Fact Friday!" Can you name these three teachers and their significance to the district? 🧡 🖤 🧡 🖤 🧡 Spoiler Alert! The image features Edward Zink, Frank Zink, and Otto Zink! Edward's legacy is honored through the naming of the Beavercreek High School Fieldhouse, Frank's in the naming of the football stadium, and Otto's name graces the gym at Ferguson Hall. The contributions of Ed, Frank, and Otto have left an indelible mark on our district. Yet, it's important to recognize that the entire Zink family has also made significant contributions. 🧡🖤 For example, the tree outside the athletic main office is in memory of the late Anton Zink. Also, Anton’s wife, Becky, has kept the scorebook for our basketball teams for 38 seasons now! Do you have a favorite Zink memory? Let us know in the comments!

🌟 Staff Spotlight: Lori Howell! 🌟 Lori has been with Beavercreek City Schools for 16 years and works as a bus driver and BHS lunch monitor. She is also "Rooted" in the BCS community as a Beavercreek High School Class of 1986 Alum! During her career at BCS, she credits Sue Rex, her bus trainer with Kettering City Schools, as being the most influential person in her career. Lori started her driving career at Kettering almost 30 years ago. Her favorite memories include meeting so many wonderful coworkers and making friends with many of them. While not driving a bus or working in the cafeteria, Lori loves to spend time with her family, taking trips to the beach, gardening, and attending car shows with her husband. 🌟 Staff Spotlight: Meet Lula Kersteiner! 🌟 If you haven't met Lu yet, you're truly missing out! Lula Kersteiner shines as the administrative assistant at Parkwood Elementary, and we're thrilled to feature her in our Staff Spotlight this week. With nearly 25 years of dedication to our district, Lu's journey has been shaped by the wisdom and kindness of influential mentors like Sue Bamford and Vicki Keivel, who have inspired and guided her along the way. When asked about her favorite BCS memory, she said, " After all this time, there are so many. But being 'a security blanket' for a young girl tops her list. "The girl was anxious about going to class, so she would stop in every day to hug her. I would tell her she was going to have a great day! She would smile and go to class." We also asked her what it means to be a member of the Creek family, and she said, "The saying that it takes a village is so very true today. We may not know what is going on in a child's life, but teachers, counselors, office staff, and administrators all working together to guide our children to be good citizens, friends, and classmates is so important. I am very thankful to be part of the BCS and Parkwood community. I hope I have helped make a difference in some small way." Beyond her dedicated work, Lu enjoys exploring the great outdoors with her husband and their beloved dog, Molly. Whether it's soaking in the beauty of Lake Erie or adventuring through Ohio and Kentucky State Park lodges, Lu's passion for travel and adventure keeps the roads hot, as her husband fondly remarks. Thank you, Lu, for your unwavering commitment and heartfelt contributions to our school community. You truly embody the spirit of excellence and compassion that defines Parkwood Elementary! 🧡🖤🧡

We highlight Jenn Courter, a 5th-grade ELA and social studies teacher at Fairbrook Elementary, for our weekly staff spotlight. 🧡🖤 Jenn has been with the district for seven years and says her career has been most influenced by those she has had the opportunity to co-teach with. "They have pushed me to find new ways to challenge our students and brought joy to my day-to-day life. I could not do my job without them." Her favorite thing about working at BCS is seeing her students, old and new, achieve wonderful things as they grow and move through the Beavercreek school system. Jenn says, "The community at Fairbrook has inspired me to be more involved with Beavercreek in and outside of the school. Not only have I built a solid foundation in Beavercreek, but my family has as well. Finally, Jenn enjoys reading and hiking in nature when not in a classroom. #beavercreeksbest #staffspotlight

Melinda has been with the district for ten years and is so grateful to be a member of the Creek family. She loves making memories at BCS and has so many that she couldn’t choose just one to highlight as her favorite. When it comes to her career, she says Ashley Kitchen has been the most influential person. When not busy at work, Melinda enjoys being with her family, enjoying the outdoors, and trying new foods from different cultures.
